Small Pieces of Glass

Learn the history of the telescope through this exciting show, Small Pieces of Glass, at the O. Wayne Rollins Planetarium in Young Harris, Georgia. Set to a thrilling soundtrack recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra, this presentation helps us to understand how the telescope has helped us achieve knowledge about space and continue to expand our understanding of the cosmos.
Small Pieces of Glass will be showing on January 13, 20, 27 and February 10, 17, and 24, 2012 at 8 PM. Tickets are $3 for adults, $2 for students, and free for those with a Young Harris College ID. For more information, call 706-379-5195.

2011 4th of July Fireworks

6th Annual Taste of the Southern Highlands

Come on out to the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds in Hiawassee, Georgia on June 28, 2011 for the 6th Annual Taste of the Southern Highlands. This ultimate “Mountain Tasting Experience” lets local restaurants and wineries showcase their delectable fare. Purchasing a ticket allows you to get a sample from any or all of the restaurants and wineries represented. There will also be musical entertainment brought to you by local talent.
The event is from 6 PM to 8 PM. Tickets are $20 for adults, $7 for children 6 – 12, and 5 and under is Free. Cosmic Laser Concert

Experience a spectacular display of laser lights dancing and stars spinning to an engaging soundtrack of music at the Rollins Planetarium located at Young Harris College in nearby Young Harris, Georgia. This fantastic cosmic laser concert can be seen on April 1, 8, and 15, 2011. Showtimes are 7 PM and 8 PM.
Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for children and non YHC students, YHC students, faculty, and staff are Free.
Warning – This show contains loud music, flashing lights and other effects that may bother some people. If you find things of this nature disturbing, it is recommended that you do not attend.

Mountain Mardi Gras

Dress up in your best party costume and join in the celebration at the Mountain Mardi Gras begin held at the Hiawassee River Trout Lodge Pavilion in Hiawassee, Georgia on March 25, 2011 from 7 PM to Midnight. There will be food plates and a disc jockey, BYOB. If you don’t want the party to end and would like to stay the night, special cabin rates are available.

History Conference at YHC

If you are interested in history, this 2 day conference may be right up your alley. “Remembrances: Constructing Narratives of Wars of the 19th and 20th Centuries” History Conference will be held at the Young Harris College on March 18-19, 2011. Students of history as well as PhD’s from regional, national and international institutions will present papers or take part in panel discussions on war time narratives and the remembrance of wars. Also part of this conference is a presentation “The Cold War in Historical Retrospect: Myths, Manipulations and Realities.” given by lecturer, Dr. Fraser Harbutt of Emory University.

The Little Star that Could

Bring the whole family out to the Rollins Planetarium at Young Harris College in nearby Young Harris, Georgia for the delightful children’s show, The Little Star that Could. This show tells a story of a little star in search of planets of his own. He meets new stars along the way and eventually finds his own planets. It teaches children about the solar system in a way that makes learning fun and easy to understand.
